Learn More About Phillip And Patricia Frost Museum Of Science
The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science is a world-class science museum committed to communicating the power of science, inspiring curiosity and exploration, and driving future innovation. Frost Science is split into four buildings in Downtown Miami's Museum Park: the Frost Planetarium, Aquarium, and North and West Wings.
Visitors may learn about the fundamental science of living systems, the solar system and known universe, the physics of flight, light, and lasers, the biology of the human body and mind, and much more. Guests may immerse themselves in the worlds of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) via interactive displays and one-of-a-kind shows. Frost Science is also committed to education, having received national recognition for its summer camps and after-school activities.
The museum's thought-provoking displays cover six stories within a North and West Wing, with rooftop observation decks holding a telescope for astronomy as well as an urban garden. The museum's permanent displays focus on South Florida's biodiversity, light physics, aviation, the human mind and body, and other topics.
The aquarium building is located in the center of the site and is where the majority of visitors will begin their journey. Grimshaw has designed a one-of-a-kind, vertically-oriented experience that lets guests interact with aquatic ecosystems at varying depths, ranging from an open-air rooftop "surface" level to more intimate, immersive galleries "below the waterline." The 500,000-gallon Gulf Stream Aquarium dominates this section of the museum.
The aquarium's distinctive cone form covers three levels, creating a cornerless environment for ocean-going animals. The bottom of the cone resolves in a large, 31-foot circular viewing glass that provides guests with a spectacular view up and into the aquarium from below, immersed in the blue depths of the Gulf Stream. Other viewing areas include strategically positioned portholes and an open-air deck with an aviary and other displays emphasizing Florida ecosystems.
